There is a definite cause for concern regarding our youth, our next generation. Although these concerns are spread across all races, the greater impact will be felt by our race. The lack of visible and active black role models is taking its toll on the youth of this generation. It is obvious that proper balance and value systems are increasingly eroded as youth place too much emphasis on pursuing potential mainly in the entertainment, sports or music industries.
While I am not criticizing the hard work of those in these fields, my concern is the imbalance of role models across the vast and varied occupational and business fields. Inadvertently, the world systems have created a stereo-type that subconsciously says this is the more appropriate and acceptable level of achievement and profession suitable for blacks who are looking to be successful. This is what the world sees and believes about blacks.
There is a great need for more media attention on the many black success stories across the world. We need to publicly reflect to our youth, the many high-achieving and successful blacks making strides in top mainstream occupational and business fields. Again, it is our responsibility to make this happen – via our own media channels – e.g. black television programs, educational resources, events, self-help books, educational/motivational audios, newspapers, radio shows etc.
Ultimately, the support to empower youths positively should begin at home, from dads and mums, from older brothers and older sisters – but what do we do when there isn’t the right support at home to begin with? It can be difficult and challenge, but not all hope is lost. In such instances, we should look outward to seek role models in the extended family or community to play that much needed and vital role.
