Are you sure you are made of stuff that can take on and overcome the challenges that may be present and yet to come? Don’t be deceived, the cold fact is being black can sometimes make the job of succeeding 10 times harder. This will not apply to everyone, but if this applies to you are you in for the long term or are you going to fall apart like a pack of cards at the first sign of pressure? If you can’t handle the pressure, then quit now. Success is not for the mentally, emotionally and physically lazy person. You have to make up your mind to be strong – very strong; resolute and resolved, though still balanced and realistic.

However, seeing yourself as a special case who is constantly overwhelmed with life’s challenges will only serve to act as a self-fulfilling prophecy of negative happenings. Develop a positive outlook on life and the challenges you currently face.

Stop the pity party, pull yourself together and rise up strong; get your life in order and take action; time is well spent. So what if you lost some money, or you lost your job or the business collapse or you got swindled? You won’t be the first nor the last. In an interview of millionaires it was said that on average they experienced bankruptcy or collapse of a business about SEVENTEEN times before they finally got their breakthrough. So, if you are only on your second or third setback, don’t be too hard on yourself.  So, there you go – it’s time to move on!

With this in mind, please note that the following are facts of life you will need to accept and not allow to deter your potential progress –

• You will never have an obstacle-free journey.
• Stop looking for the ideal moment to start working on your potential – there is no such thing. It is an illusion! Start now, today! It may only be gradual or a little at a time but start doing something.
• It is only practical to expect certain challenges to present themselves when you begin to explore unfamiliar territories – there are bound to be issues, it is normal so don’t quit.
• Some of these issues present themselves because you are black; this is a fact you have to deal with head-on, and not shy away from it. Be positive and find creative ways to overcome, don’t grow an attitude or quit as you will be the one to lose out.

Actually, the evidence of obstacles usually implies that you are making headway towards your potential goal. The unfamiliarity of pushing into new frontiers is usually the obstacle.  When you come up against such challenges, you are not supposed to quit as a result. You are expected to find creative ways to overcome your challenges – either within you or by seeking help and support externally.

My take on the matter is, “always try first of all to exhaust all options within your motherland before sojourning to a foreign land”. No point complaining that there are no ‘opportunities to be found’ when you can’t even be disciplined to exert yourself to at least take advantage of what currently is available around you. If you are physically and mentally lazy and undisciplined in your motherland, you will also be physically and mentally lazy and undisciplined in the foreign land of supposedly ‘greater opportunities’.

Maybe it is your mindset you first of all need to work on, then once you’ve exhausted what is around you, it might be time to explore horizons in the foreign land. That said, despite the seemingly glitter of the foreign lands it also comes with its own set of challenges –there are invisible boundaries that tries to put a ceiling on how far you can go, where you can live and what you can earn.

I have seen and observed over the years some people leaving their well paid jobs in their motherland to travel to the foreign lands (UK, US or Canada) only to live life at a standard of living worse than where they were coming from. Yet I have seen the opposite happen. I have also observed those who have spent years in the foreign lands now going back to their motherland to pursue opportunities. There are no hard and fast rules here. The most important thing is to ‘count the cost’ very very carefully before making life-changing decisions.

Yes, the Third world like Africa may not offer some of the advancement of the First world but it does offer opportunities and other ‘sense of belonging’ that money can’t buy. Either way, as blacks, we should be prepared for twice the hard work in pursuing our potential – be it in the motherland or foreign lands.
